Essential Question

How long do we need to exercise to burn off the calories we eat in a meal?

Project Description​

 

Students first explored how long it would take celebrities to burn off the calories of different McDonald's menu items. After they recognized the affect of a person's weight, type of exercise chosen, and duration of exercise on calories burnt, they each selected an APIS student to focus on. They carefully measured and calculated the caloric value of a typical plate of food for that student, found their weight and favorite exercise, and set to calculating how long it would take them to burn off the food. Once calculations were complete, students used photography, photo editing programs, and Google Drawings to design an informative poster of their findings that was posted in our cafeteria.

Students hand wrote an explanation of the process. I need to copy them from the cafeteria wall. Will try to do later this week :)

Standards Addressed:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.RP.A.3 Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.RP.A.2 Understand the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b with b ≠ 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.NS.B.3 Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation.
