Adding Beauty to Our World

Authors: Christine Kuhl &

Madison Enos

Grades: K - 4

Subjects: Art, Reading, Writing, Math, Science & Engineering

Project Description

As a new school, we thought it was vital that our first project focus largely on building community. We wanted our children to have a sense of belonging so that they could feel safe to take risks in their learning. We also wanted them to understand that one of our main responsibilities in the classroom is to take care of each other. We hoped to accomplish these goals in our study of beauty within ourselves, in each other, and in the world around us.

Skills in Focus

Social Emotional: listened, built empathy, communicated with kindness, understood that we all have strengths and needs, built a growth mindset, problem solved, and asked questions

Art: illustrated, drafted, critiqued, and used various mediums

Reading & Writing: participated in shared and independent reading and writing, clearly wrote and explained ideas, used specific words, phrases, and sensory details, interpreted poetry, developed our comprehension, and reflected

Math: collected, analyzed, and interpreted data from student-created surveys

Science & Engineering: used our surroundings and engineering challenges to observe, ask questions, construct explanations, and collaborate to design solutions

Products and Exhibition

Students will create self-portraits that include images that represent their unique strengths and identities. They will also write poetry about themselves. Students will share these products at their first exhibition on Back to School Night on September 8th. Their artwork will remain displayed in our classrooms as a reminder of our individual and collective beauty.
